Chowringhee Rd
Formerly this busy road was called Chowringhee Rd. Its new name is Jawaharlal Nehru Road. Yellow taxis are a common sight in Kolkata and a common form of transportation. The Ambassador has been in production since 1957. The pollution in Kolkata is worse than Dhaka partly due to these Ambassador taxis. However, Kolkata was much more modern than Dhaka and had many tourists unlike Dhaka. We saw many hand-pulled rickshaws, which was still legal in 2006. The language of Kolkata and West Bengal is Bangla, so were could communicate easily! Bangladesh and West Bengal were unified until India's independence from the British. Kolkata was a 14 hour bus ride from Dhaka and the ticket cost $12. The experience at the border was well, an experience.
