Retirement Party

Snacks! Like anywhere else in the world, everyone is happy when there are snacks at work.

A common sight in our office is that we drink tea here every morning and afternoon. Today we had chanachur, Mymensingh mishty, cake, and an orange.

One of the office guards, Nurul, recently had a stroke. After his hospitalization had been completed, the job creation office decided that he should not come back to work. The reasoning was that it is highly possible that he may have another stroke, and if this happened while he was working alone at night at the office, no one would be around to help him. I don't think that people save for retirement, they assume that their work will continue. When the unexpected happens, it is very difficult for them to manage.

But, as is the custom, job creation offered his job to his son for a temporary time of 6 months, after which they will decide if they want to continue to employ him. At our function today, every member of the office gave a lengthy speech (well mine was brief as it was in Bangla) and Nurul was presented with a gold ring. We all said "goodbye" to Nurul, but I'm sure he will come to the office often to visit and see his fellow guards.
