(During my visit to the Agailjara office, I discovered that the Muktagatcha office is going to move to Mymensingh by March 2006. The Muktagatcha staff are always going to Mymensingh as two partners are there as well as markets, stores, and other businesses. Whenever they need to go to Dhaka or Netrogona (where another partner is) they must go through Mymensingh. The only reason to stay in Muktagatcha is because one partner is located there. In addition the Muktagatcha office needs more space when the Agailjara staff joins us in March as the Agailjara office is closing. Shinjita herself will also move to Mymensingh from Dhaka so she can be closer to the job creation program that she administers. As soon as the location for the new office is finalized, my search for new living accommodations will begin. I will be moving back to Mymensingh by March 1st.)
Wednesday was an unusual day at the office. Jerry (country representative), Derek (part-time country representative), and Shinjita (job creation administrator) were all scheduled to come to the Muktagatcha office. All the Agailjara office staff (all - including guards & mail runners) were also at the office. Everyone assumed that since one office was closing some jobs would be cut. Now only one person would be needed in one office as opposed to two people in two offices doing the same thing. Last year MCC Bangladesh cut the size of the staff down, but more in the agriculture program than in the job creation program. Having three MCC executives visit the office in one day is slightly rare, so everyone expected some large announcement. The announcement: The job creation staff will be reorganized into one office with a new organizational structure. The positions that currently have two people (one in Muktagatcha and one in Agailjara) will have to be re-interviewed for. This should happen at the beginning of January. After this sobering announcement we all had a massive lunch together, and then the bearers of this news went back to Dhaka. The rest of the day no work happened as everyone sat around and talked.

That would be really sad news to hear that so many people will lose their jobs. It is kind of ironic that the "job creation program" is cutting jobs.
you won't lose your job will you?
It's only around 3-4 people that will lose their job, and we are always trying to make more jobs for the partner producers of handicrafts. The cutbacks are just in MCC's staff. And my job is not in any danger, MCC wants more expatriots to come.
